Cortar Retratos
Reading the city, is an essential metaphor of my practice.
The following projects are photographic interventions of subway ads focused on the many blank, alienated facial expressions of the photos in movie, TV, and city ads. The work includes performance scores, imagining prompts given by artistic directors to their subjects and asks: What does it mean to be a spectator today? How are citizens persuaded to see themselves? Can the imagery of the collectivity be framed to mirror what's within each of us?
Process:
Dispossessions
Capturing, shooting, owning. when I take photos, I write, through it's language, deeply entangled with colonial and violent metaphors. My photographic acts intend to read the subject/object divide, and disembodiment in the public sphere, picking up on white supremacy, techno-capitalism, urban spectacle and impoverishment.
