Originally from Venezuela, Gerardo Morantes is a performance, visual artist and educator focused on community and public practice. He has an Arts Agency and Administration degree from The University of Puerto Rico and a Social Communication degree from the University Rafael Belloso Chacin in Venezuela.
He has facilitated art programs as the community manager of the Guggenheim Museum, and the coordinator of 92nd Street Y's Young Leaders program, and the Bronx-based social-impact music program, UpBeat NYC. He has been awarded the LMCC grant for Creative Engagement (2023) and was part of the Teaching Artist Project (2021).
Gerardo began his performance practice in 2014 with the performance group PISO Proyecto under the tutelage of Noemí Segarra in Puerto Rico. After moving to New York, he took a ten-year hiatus while navigating financial challenges and uprootedness. He returned to his practice in 2024, fully embracing PISO’s improvisational and civic and comunity-based approach.
